Let's Take a Bike Ride
Biking is a great way to get out and enjoy nature as a family and Texas has miles of easy to advanced trails to explore. Whether peddling down an urban bike path or exploring a single track on a mountain bike, biking offers a different perspective of nature. We would like to highlight some of the best family friendly places to go for a bike ride in your community.
The Southern Walnut Creek Trail is Austin's first Urban Trail. The trail is open for public use and begins at Govalle Park in East Austin and ends in the vicinity of Johnny Morris Road and Daffen Lane. The trail is approximately 7.3 miles in length and consists of a 10' wide concrete trail with 2' shoulders. The trail meanders along the Walnut Creek and offers nice birding and a view of the city not otherwise seen by many.
Caprock Canyon State Park and Trailway has 16 miles of mountain bike trails that range from easy to advanced. You will be sure to be amazed by the breath taking views, but make sure you take plenty of water when you embark on these trails no mater what time of year you venture out. http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/caprock-canyons
The Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi Nature & Hiking Trail wraps around the Ward island and is designed to be enjoyed by both fitness enthusiasts and nature explorers! This 7.3-mile hard surface trail is lighted from dusk until dawn everyday and is an excellent location to walk, bike, rollerblade or jog while taking in the splendor of Ward Island. Bring along your pet! Just make sure they stay on a leash.
Terry Hershey Park offers 9 miles of easy to moderate trails along the bayou bottom lands. The park has both paved trails and natural surface trails. In addition to the trails the park also has a butterfly garden, wildlife view area and kids fitness area. http://www.terryhersheypark.org/index.php
White Rock Lake Trail offers a 9 mile loop around the lake with paved paths. The trail is great for families with wide lanes and rolling grades with plenty of stopping points and natural features. San Antonio has one of the best biking trails systems in the country with the addition of the San Antonio River Walk now has over 20 miles of walking and biking paths.
