Description:

Help us conduct a survey for the host plant of the iconic Monarch Butterfly: Milkweed.

Become a citizen scientist by helping us survey for Milkweed and Monarch Butterflies! Join Texas Master Naturalists and a park ranger behind Big Tree, an area normally closed to visitors. We'll search for milkweed and count how many Monarchs we observe to report to citizen scientist projects such as Journey North.

This survey may take you into areas of dense vegetation where you may come into contact with insects, ticks, and possibly snakes. Be sure to dress appropriately.

How to prepare: There are no restroom facilities at Big Tree. The nearest restroom is located at Goose Island Headquarters, about 1 mile from Big Tree. We recommend wearing long sleeves, pants, long socks, hiking boots, a hat, sun protection, and plenty of bug spray. Bring plenty of water as well.

When: Thursday, March 28 at 10:00am (moved from 3/21)
Where to Meet: Big Tree parking lot (on 12th St)
What to Bring: water, bug spray, appropriate clothing (see above)
