Description:

This program is designed to teach children and adults the basics of geocaching. Participants are then able to use those skills to find hidden caches and complete an arts and craft activity. Perfect for the beginner geocacher.

Join us at 2:30 p.m. at Goose Island State Park day use area (by the Recreation Hall) for the basics of geocaching. This program will go over what geocaching is, types of caches, cache safety, cache contents, and more!

After Geocaching 101, participants will have a chance to try out their new skills and look for hidden caches set up for this event. Rather than having tradeable items, these caches will be part of a series used to assemble a craft. Bring your own GPS unit or borrow one for the geocaching portion.

  • When:  2:30 p.m.
  • Where:  The Day Use Area, look for a park vehicle parked near the picnic shelters.
  • Useful things to bring:  Water, bug spray, wear close toed shoes, and bring a GPS unit if you have one.
  • Terrain:  This will take place in a field, ground may be uneven. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.
  • Audience:  This event is appropriate for all ages and designed to show you the basics of caching. The caches used for this will be simple and relatively easy to locate. (If bringing a large group, please contact the park in advance to ensure adequate supplies. We may be able to set up a Geocaching 101 for organized groups with advance notice.)
  •  Fees:  There is no fee for attending the program. Although a valid park entrance permit is required to access the day use area. Day entry fees are $5 per person 13 years of age and up, children 12 and under are free, or use your Texas State Park Pass.
